How I cured my sensitive skin in 48hrs!

I recently trialled some skincare for a review and my skin absolutely freaked out within 12 hours of using it!

It’s been a bit of a nightmare trying to get my skin to calm back down – but eventually I found some fantastic products which did so beautifully – and super quickly – so I had to write a blog to tell you about my new found skincare heroes….I’ll start by saying that I don’t usually have such sensitive skin. It’s what I would describe as relatively normal and pretty resilient to new products.

I’ve used tons of different skincare ranges over the years and rotate what I use every few months, so I was really shocked to get such a strong reaction.

After using the new products for the first time one evening, I woke up with blotchy, uncomfortable skin and tiny spots all over my cheeks and forehead – and the skin which didn’t have spots on felt ‘rough’ with texture under the surface.

My first thought was to immediately go back to my normal products, which I did, but my skin was not at all happy and felt itchy and prickly – particularly after the steam of a shower.  The following day I woke to more spots and the texture of my whole face was rough!

I tried a very gentle, moisturising face mask but that didn’t help, I took an antihistamine tablet in case I was having an actual allergic reaction, but to be honest it didn’t look that way…. and despite only using Savlon on my face to try to calm it down, a few days later I was still uncomfortable and spotty.

In desperation, whilst out meeting a client I nipped into a little independent Chemist and noticed they had the Avene range which I’ve seen many times in Boots but never actually tried.

It’s one of those brands you see next to ones such as La Roche Posay and Vichy – so it’s a little more expensive and a range I would describe as specialised, their ‘thing’ being containing natural spring water and dealing with sensitive skin.

A moisturiser is normally about £13.00 but they had a Sensitive Skin Kit specifically for ‘super sensitised’ skin which contains 3 different products – 2 x 50ml Cleansers, the equivalent of a Toner and a Moisturiser for £20.

The lady who served me said she had sensitive skin and swore by it – and her face looked a hell of a lot better than mine! 😉

The product claims: “The answer for those whose skin feels tight, blotchy and uncomfortable, this gentle routine contains all the steps needed to soothe, comfort and protect the skin and helps to reduce skin sensitivity long term.”

I used all 3 products for the first time that evening and woke up the following day with calmer, softer and non-blotchy skin! Even after a shower it was fine and 2 days on from using all 3 products twice a day, my skin looked and felt almost back to normal – no new spots, no itchiness, no prickling, no blotches and the little lumps under my skin had almost gone! Thank God!

The three products in the kit are:

Extremely Gentle Cleanser Lotion – a ‘very gentle, plant-based cleansing agent’ which contains parcerine that is calming and reduces skin reactivity’.

You’re meant to apply this cleanser and wipe it off with cotton wool, as apparently splashing your face with water can increase sensitivity – but I’m never a big fan of cream cleansers that you leave on the skin, I just prefer to use a cloth and water, so that’s what I have been doing.

I apply the cream onto my face with dry hands and just wipe it off gently with a warm, soft cloth (I stopped using my muslin cloth in case it was too rough for my flared up skin).

Thermal Spring Water Spray (Toner) – ‘You will feel wrapped in soothing softness. All the gentle purity of Avène Thermal Spring Water provides you with long-lasting protection.’

This is a very fine, refreshing mist which feels lovely and cooling on the skin. No fragrance, literally just water- I was a little bit dubious about just spraying some water on my face and whether it would do anything – but it certainly seems to calm my skin down and instantly feels very calming after the heat and steam of a warm shower.

Skin Recovery Cream (Moisturiser)  – ‘Rapidly calms irritations and gives long-lasting protection to naturally sensitive skin or skin that has become irritable’.  I would agree!

A light, unscented lotion that feels super silky as you spread it over your face. Again, no fragrance so I have been missing the lovely smell of my Elemis products, but obviously for very sensitive skin fragrance is a big no-no.

The tube has a special nozzle which apparently prevents bacteria getting into the tube because it has no preservatives or parabens in it, that can irritate your skin. (There is also a Rich version of the Skin Recovery Cream for people with drier skin).

Coincidentally, a couple of days after finding these products I watched a very popular beauty YouTuber, Melissa Alatorres who happened to post a video about the skincare regime that has cured her acne and sensitivity – and she was full of praise for the Skin Recovery Cream. She also talked a lot about several products from another range which I have heard very good things about, so her video is here if you would like to have a look!

I have continued using the Avene products for the past week and although my skin feels and looks completely back to normal now I’m guessing I will use this regime for a little while longer to be sure the sensitivity is really gone.

I will definitely be taking what’s left of this kit on holiday with me because I know changes in temperature or exposure to the sun can kick-off sensitivity.

What are your skin heroes? I’d love to hear of any other super products I should think about trying!

This is such a timely article! I e been suffering with my skin lately. Much like you, until recently my skin was really quite normal, resilient, occasional hormonal spit but lately it’s itchy, spotty, scaly and generally feels very unsettled. I’ve got some antibiotic cream from the doctor but I’m going to definitely give these Avene products a try 💕

Oh good I really hope the article has helped! Although sorry you are struggling with it – so frustrating when your skin suddenly changes and nothing seems to help. Yes I highly, highly recommend giving these ones a try I was gobsmacked how quickly they worked! x

Oh dear, you’ve been through so much! I’m happy to hear you found something which is working <3 I've never used any of these products as my skin isn't sensitive and haven't reacted so badly to any of the cosmetics I use but I love Avene. My mum bought me their serum when I was a teenager for the first time as the pharmacy was closing down so they had a huge sale and everything was over 50 % reduced. My skin responded really well to it and I've tried so many of their products since then, not reduced anymore but luckily they always live up to the price and my expectations 🙂

Hi Mal, Yes I’d never really thought of using their products before, but I’m so glad I found them and have since heard so many good things about the range from different people! After what I’ve experienced I really feel for people who have sensitive skin all the time! Tiffany x

That sounds like such an awful experience. I’m glad you got to fix the issues with your skin.

My skin is weird in that it gets very flaky in the winter but still oily in the t-zone. Depending on when I go to a cosmetics store the lady there will either tell me that I have dry or oily skin. I guess it’s more like dehydrated combination skin, but it’s so difficult to find the right products for that. I recently started using a new serum from an organic local brand, and so far it’s been pretty good on my skin. Hope it continues like that. 🙂

Oh that sounds quite tricky to manage! It’s amazing what a difference finding the right products can make isnt it! X

My skin is prone to flare ups mostly because I’m a little useless with my skin routine, especially if I’ve had a few drinks! I’ve also seen avene but have never tried it donne to time I’ll buy some and let you know how it goes!

My skin is in such a horrible state right now. I’ve been breaking out like crazy but I know where the problem stems from… I’ve been falling asleep without washing my face more than I like 😬 Glad you got the issue fixed 🙂

So glad you were able to find something that worked!! I have very sensitive skin and am prone to acne breakouts. I might have to give this line a try 🙂

I’ve always had sensitive skin, but especially now for some reason. Thanks for this info!

I’ve been reading a lot of good reviews about Avene. I just don’t know if this brand is already available here. My skin isn’t sensitive but it is oily and acne-prone. Thus, I know the dangers of using different products as it may cause my skin to react negatively.

Hi Hazel, yes my skin is normally ok so it was a bit of a shock. I’ve had a quick look online for you and I think you can get avene in the Philippines so even if it’s not in local stores you should be able to get it online? I’ve heard it’s good for people with acne because it is so calming but I imagine you would want to use it with other acne treatments? X

Love this post. So informative and helpful. My skin is a bit all over the place and I’m definitely going to look into these products 🙂 Thanks, Tiffany!

My rule of thumb, less is better and I stay out of trouble with my skin!

  13. June 7, 2017 / 11:02 pm

We are completely plant based for our skincare, too! We make all of our own now with minimal, premium and plant based ingredients. Like Kim said above, less is more. Glad you found something that works for you!

This sounds so awesome! I”m glad you found something that worked for you! I need to try this – my skin is a mess.

A touch of nappy cream always works wonders on both mine and the children’s skin believe it or not

  16. June 8, 2017 / 10:48 pm

That’s really interesting and not a brand I’ve come across for sensitive skin before – I shall be making a note of it. I’m so glad it seems to have helped you.

My partner suffers terribly. He can pretty much only use products for babies!.
