I’ve just started using a calorie counting app and it’s amazing the shift in mindset it’s given me, right from the very first time I entered my breakfast info into the diary section!
I’d like to slim down just a little bit, but the main reason I’m doing so is because I’ve become such a sugar monster! I’m craving it at all times of the day, so I decided to start keeping more of a track of what I’m eating and counting calories means that rather than reaching for something naughty, I’ll have to have more naturally sweet options like fruit instead to satisfy my cravings.
So I wanted to use something really simple to start monitoring what I’m eating, otherwise I know I won’t stick to it and I found one on Google Play that sounded ok and decided to give it a go.
The first hideous bit was entering in my current weight and cr*p! I was a bit shocked when I weighed myself…. I was nearly a stone heavier than I thought I would be! Then you enter what weight you would like to be and based on your height etc it calculates how many calories a day you should be eating to lose weight at a sensible rate.
The amount it came up with for me seemed about right and around what I expected, so then you just have to start entering what you eat for each meal and it gives you a countdown on the home screen telling you how many calories you’ve got left for that day. I’m finding it really simple to use, different foods are easy to find and I’ve checked the amount of calories which the app says they are against the packaging of a few different things to make sure it’s accurate, which it has been.
Like most people, I go through stages of being good but then if my other half has ice cream or crisps or cake in the house I find it really difficult to resist having some…. so at least this way I can make an informed choice, look up the calories of what it is and whether I’ve got enough allowance left to have a treat rather than just helping myself without thinking about it!
I now feel more in control of what I’m eating – not obsessively, in a responsible ‘keeping an eye on things’ sort of way and just immediately knowing you are going to have to account for what you are eating by entering the calories into your diary makes you stop and think about what it is you are about to have!
My husband literally just offered me a slice of pizza while writing this…. and I went to automatically accept it, but then suddenly thought’ I wonder how many calories are in it’?! …. and resisted temptation for the first time in a while!
I’m not going to set myself some great big long challenge otherwise I know it will put me off, I’m just going to give this a go for the next couple of weeks and see if I can lose a few pounds.
FIRST WEIGH IN: I weighed myself yesterday, on morning 11 and I have lost 2.2lbs – according to the app, a healthy amount is to lose 1-1.5lbs a week so I’m on track to be gradually losing a few pounds without doing anything too drastic!
I haven’t felt hungry at all over the last 12 days and I think the difference using an app is its making me aim to keep meals lower-calorie, so having extra vegetables, slightly less pasta etc and monitoring my snacks… and wine because I never really gave the calories in that much thought.
I’m feeling good, feeling motivated and I’ll keep you updated with progress!
