Vintage Daytime Metallics

I’m a total magpie for anything shiny or sparkly, so this year it’s been great for me that there’s been a load of ‘space inspired’ metallic fashion around – and not just for evenings out either, it’s become much more acceptable for people to wear them in the daytime too.

Mind you, i’ve always thought you can get away with some sequins or shimmer at any time of the day as long as you style things correctly so you don’t look overdressed …. and I think daytime metallics are perfect for when you’re going out somewhere that’s relatively smart and want to have a bit of glam without going too over the top and combining one or two blingy pieces with more casual t shirts or jeans keeps your outfit balanced.

I’m also a big fan of vintage shopping because you can save alot of money, or buy brands that would normally be out of your reach so I’ve got quite a few vintage pieces in my wardrobe – a gorgeous full length, velvet Karen Millen coat I got for just £20, a few different blazers … one of which is the sequinned one in the pics below that I have worn a ton and it’s perfect for daytime glam …  plus a couple of pairs of boots and some jewellery too.

So when a big online vintage shop called thredUP said they would like to work with me I was really pleased because I don’t think I’ve featured any of my vintage clothes on the blog so far. They are the world’s largest online marketplace to buy and sell second-hand clothes, but until recently you couldn’t get their items in the UK – but now you can woohoo! (The postage to the UK is very reasonable and there were no additional customs charges when my parcel arrived).

They have a huge choice and get new stock daily so I spent quite a while having a good browse around over a couple of days!

One thing they seem really brilliant for is designer bags – I don’t mean a vintage Chanel that’s still going to set you back £1000, I mean more affordable designers like Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Coach, DKNY. As you may already know, I have a major weakness for bags and was getting ready to do the next post in my series of my go to outfits – daytime metallics – so it seemed like a particular pewter beauty by Michael Kors I stumbled upon was meant for me! 😉
It arrived in cute packaging:

Vintage bag on my vintage chair- still need to get round to painting it!

I chose the Michael Kors bag from thredUP because of its versatility – it’s striking but not overpowering and being a pewter metallic, is a neutral colour that will go with tons of different outfits:
Smaller bags are really on trend right now but it’s still big enough to get your phone, keys, cards etc in it and so will also be the perfect little companion for a night out!

The sequin blazer I got a few years ago is definitely one of my favourite vintage items because although it’s got plenty of sparkle to it, it’s also quite a subtle colour, so perfect to wear in the daytime.
Heading out for lunch at a local hotel, I paired it with a simple white t shirt and dark blue skinny jeans:
… but I then blinged things back up with my metallic accessories!
I went for a big statement, sparkly necklace which is also vintage and one of my absolute favourites, some simple stud earrings and a single diamonte ring so as not to compete too much with my clothes.
I always think a nice rich, dark nail colour also stops things looking too girly!

So off I went to Mal Maison in Cheltenham – it’s a lovely place to go to for a special lunch because they have a beautiful conservatory filled with exotic plants and lots of cosy lounge corners to chill in afterwards.

Other things I saw on the thredUP site were an absolutely gorgeous coat by JCrew which was $99 with a value of $375, some ankle boots by Stuart Weitzman for $89 with a value of $475 and a Diane von Furstenberg dress for $104 instead of retail $395… plus there’s a ton of clothing from as little as a few dollars, so you don’t have to be buying designer brands.
I’m definitely going to be browsing their site regularly for more bargains!

Obviously we have the advantage in the UK of the exchange rate as well so you save even more buying in dollars and because I’ve featured the company, they have very kindly given me a discount code for you …. For 50% off which is really amazing!

Just use the code BOHOANDBLUSH at checkout. It gives 50% off entire first-time orders to the first 50 users and lasts till the last day of this year.  (I don’t make anything if you buy from them, this offer is just for you.)

So if you like buying second-hand items and particularly if you like some of the American brands that you can’t really get here on eBay or Depop, I would definitely recommend you taking a look at their site!

Next week things are going to start getting christmassy round here with sparking lights and jewellery plus delicious festive coffee recipes!

Oh my gosh! That bag is darling!! I love the way you’ve balanced glitz for daytime use – that’s something I’ve always struggled with, but I’m the type who until recently felt dressed up if I was wearing a skirt (tomboy/non-fashion-conscious life). I love it!

Aaah thank you! You should give it a go, maybe with just a t-shirt that has a bit of sparkly embellishment on it or something ?!

  2. December 3, 2017 / 11:04 pm

That bag is so cute! I had heard of ThredUp, but didn’t realize that they carried bags/accessories as well. Guess I know what site I’ll be hitting next! 😉

Im actually a big fan of vintage stores as well. Some of the best ‘old man sweaters’ or jackets can be found in those places. No kidding, my wife said to me today ‘Let’s go t value village and see if we can find you a new jacket’ for a christmas party next weekend.

  13. December 10, 2017 / 12:19 pm

Love the bag! Especially for the evening to break up a black dress. Tiffany, you look stunning!

  14. December 11, 2017 / 12:00 pm

The bag looks great with the dress and the whole vintage thing is new to me. I don’t know why but I’ve always assumed it was just for women. Maybe I need to get away from my jeans / t-shirt daily combos.

  15. December 18, 2017 / 9:33 pm

I don’t generally wear a lot of metallics but I’m LOVING this!
