My Guilty Pleasures

Its getting colder by the day and one of the ways I try to combat the grey Winter months is by treating myself when I can by doing little things that makes me feel happier… and some of those things that go on behind closed doors are not necessarily something I usually openly admit to doing – but I’m going to let you in on my guilty little pleasures, because let’s face it we all have them!!

So here are some of mine:

Reality TV – It’s pure escapism and I’m only slightly ashamed to admit it – I have quite the obsession with any kind of reality TV, especially the more cheesy kind.

Real housewives of Beverly Hills, New York, New Jersey – the more fake tan and bitching the better!

The bachelor, the bachelorette, bachelor in Paradise – reality TV ‘romance’ gold!

Made in Chelsea, The Only Way Is Essex, The Kardashians, Geordie Shore …

+ any kind of home or body makeover series…… yep, I pretty much watch them all.

Eating cold apple crumble for breakfast – seriously it is so good! And it’s the perfect treat because on a cold Sunday afternoon you can have a roast and treat yourself with warm crumble and custard afterwards…. then on Monday morning you can sit in your pyjamas eating the leftovers – rebel against that healthy muesli or porridge!

Having a 90s rock sing-a-thon – my music tastes have never really changed and it’s always been ‘hair metal’ for me – I can frequently be found air drumming along to Spotify as I sit at the computer and write, but now and again I will crank it up on the lounge speakers and have a good old wail along…. its not pretty.

Having a pyjama day – nothing revolutionary here, I’m sure if you spoke to pretty much anyone who works from home, they would admit to not getting dressed some days.

If I’m feeling tired and sluggish and generally non-dynamic, I will spend the day in my fleecy pyjamas…. so yes, whilst air drumming at the computer I will quite possibly be doing it in my PJ’s.

Lunchtime fizz for no reason at all – occasionally there will be the remnants of a bottle of Prosecco in the fridge left over from the weekend – just occasionally, because why would you leave any?! – so I will treat myself to a crafty glass mid-afternoon (….. probably whilst in my pyjamas and air drumming).

Buying myself flowers – that’s a luxury I wouldn’t normally spend money on, but now and again I like to treat myself to a bunch of flowers that are not full on bouquet status, but also not a £2.99 bunch of carnations from Tesco.

Turning my phone off – isn’t it actually quite sad that has to be a guilty pleasure?

With so much of my work online, I’m always on alert for an email from a client or a comment on Instagram and it becomes really hard to switch off.

I think being attached to your mobile is really quite addictive and if I turn it off to give myself some peace and quiet for a little while, I will feel genuinely edgy and guilty for the first half an hour or so – but then amazingly free.  And whilst writing this it’s making me think I need to do it a hell of a lot more often!

Buying myself a posh book – I’ve gradually accumulated a lovely little stack of ‘coffee table’ books (you can see my blog about them here) and it feels a real treat to sit down with a cup of fresh coffee and flick through a big hardback book looking at beautiful photographs.

Watching a film in the daytime when I’m meant to be working – there’s something about doing pretty much anything in the daytime when you are really meant to be working that feels extra indulgent, but there’s something particularly about watching a film that feels like an extra treat for me. Very occasionally I will camp out on the sofa under a soft blanket watching a chick flick when I’m meant to be copywriting – invariably I will then have to work in the evening to make up for it, but there’s something about doing things at times when you’re not meant to that feels a bit rebellious and therefore extra enjoyable!

So those are the guilty pleasures I will be indulging in over the coming months – what are yours? I would love to hear about them!

Hope you have a brilliant week whether you are flat-out working or indulging in the odd little treat or two!

Those are all pretty much my guilty pleasures as well – except the air drumming. I have zero rhythm, no matter how hard I try! 😉

I can relate to a lot of your guilty pleasures! I’ve discovered a really good 90s playlist this week which I’ve been happily listening to online – so many great songs I’d forgotten about.

If it was socially acceptable id wear nothing but PJ’s!

PJ’s, 90’s Rock and Apple crumble…..and not feel guilty at all!

I do a pj day often on Sundays in the winter months and indulge in knitting, reading and a great movie! (Of course not all at once)

LOVE this!! daytime movie watching is my guilty pleasure too! And I’m definitely with you on the breakfast thing: think of it as breakfast pastry! 😉

Cold apple crumble is the best, especially with strawberry yoghurt over the top. Daytime film watching and phone off are great ones too. Guilty pleasures are definitely an important part of life.

Those all sound so fun! I’m not a big reality TV watcher, but I definitely agree with you on having some bubbly at lunch! It feels so elegant!

  11. December 12, 2017 / 12:16 am

I like to watch TV shows while I work! I also love eating some chocolate in the evening when I’m winding down 🙂

Anytime you fancy a 90s rock PJ party eating cold apple crumble in the morning I’m there!! Much to PK’s distaste, my guilty pleasure is Star Trek, and he is most annoyed that I’ve gone back to watch them all again starting with the Next Generation – he doesn’t see why he should watch something from before he was born!
