I’ve always had a bit of a thing for anything mediaeval – TV programmes, films and books like Lord of the Rings, so I love visiting castles – they’re always great for doing some photography and I suppose I like the romantic notion of being a mediaeval princess for an hour or two – dreaming of wearing a long velvet gown and a crown, sipping wine from an elaborate silver cup – well the reality was kind of along those lines …. wearing a lovely embroidered, velvet dress Shein very kindly sent me recently, a slightly sparkly hat to keep my head warm and sipping hot coffee from a flask because I nearly froze to death taking the photos of my dress when it was -2 degrees haha?!

I’d had a nice Christmas but took very little time off and only had two days without doing any work, so really felt I needed a break – some country air and peace and quiet for a few days! So we headed off into the forest area last week, which is only about an hour from where I live and stayed in a lovely cottage for a few days – blog about that coming very soon! – and one of the things I really wanted to do while there was visit Goodrich Castle.
I much prefer going to a small, tumbledown type of castle than the bigger ones like Warwick Castle that have been turned into something reminiscent of Disney. It’s usually a lot quieter and although Goodrich is well looked after, there are plenty of parts that are more untouched and actual ruins which I love taking photos of.
In we go….
With my love of things mediaeval, it seemed quite fitting to be wearing an ornate velvet dress here!
I’m always a big fan of embroidery so I adore the details on the balloon sleeves too.
Hello down there…
It was pretty cold on the top of the castle! I did have a giant, snuggly teddy coat with me – which definitely isn’t the most flattering item in the world, but it was so freezing I didn’t care and I was flinging it on and off in between pictures – halfway round I’d gone completely numb so it wasn’t so bad then!
I really love the rich blue of the velvet dress, I always like jewel toned colours and it feels so soft and lovely!
I think I’m going to get a ton of wear out of this dress, it’ll be perfect for the Spring and is going to look lovely with a biker jacket or a cream faux fur gilet over the top…in the meantime it has to stay under a giant coat!
The dress looks great with a belt to bring in the waist too, but I was a bit worried it would go too short for going up and down castle steps if I’d done that on this day!
Time to leave and rejoin the 21st Century 😉
Thanks again to Shein for sending me my lovely dress – if you like embroidered or floral pieces, which is still going to be a strong trend for the rest of this year, take a look at their site as they have thousands of great options!
