It may still be grey and chilly outside most days, but the Spring fashion collections are starting to emerge with new season’s pieces arriving online and in stores – thank God there’s some brightness on the horizon!
There are a few specific trends I’m looking forward to wearing – and a few you definitely won’t be seeing me in, so here’s my round up of the 2018 fashion trends and what I think of them:
– Print –
Check is not just for this Winter and still around big time for Spring, which is great news for anyone who invested in items over the past couple of months…
My longline blazer was kindly sent to me by Romwe. Click any pics to shop!
Gingham and plaid were also all over the catwalks of Fendi and Burberry in both darker and pastel colours, but they really aren’t my favourite to be honest – in fact I wrote a whole blog post about why I hate gingham here but if you like it or don’t already have some check print in your wardrobe it’s definitely worth adding something to your wardrobe!
Does anybody know why I raise my right eyebrow when making a serious face?! …
I can’t be serious for long anyway!
Stripes – I haven’t seen many people talking about this print, but I’ve seen tons of it online and there are a number of reasons why I really like a striped print.
Obvious it’s very flattering, but also I love a print clash and, like check, I think stripes work so well alongside lots of other patterns such as polka dots and florals ….. which brings me onto those next!
Polka dots are everywhere – I’ve just ordered a really cute ruffled top and I know it’s an item that’s going to go with a ton of stuff – skinny and flared jeans, floral skirts and smart capri trousers – a polka dot top is an absolute classic that you will be able to wear for the long term.
Florals – to be honest I don’t know if you can even call this a trend anymore because it feels like they are always around, but again they are going to be huge this year with prints lightening up for Spring, brightening up for Summer and darkening down again for next Winter… and I for one love wearing floral pieces at any time of the year.
– Colour –
Brights – purples, yellow, red, hot pink and green, there’s a variety of tropical colours heading our way so pretty much anything goes.
This year’s Pantone colour of the year was a little bit controversial with a lot of people reacting in a negative way to the jewel toned, rich purple when it was announced recently. This colour will filter down in different strengths and shades, but I think in the warm Summer months it’s actually a really vibrant and flattering colour to wear and it always reminds me of travelling to Asia where you see lots of purple mixed with rich reds and pinks.
Pastels – as usual there are plenty of pastels around too with delicate lilacs, pale pinks and creamy yellows and they are always flattering, always lovely for Summer weddings and parties.
I just bought a beautiful pastel blue, lace maxi dress in the sales for a special occasion later this year and I love how pastels look when worn with metallic accessories…. which brings me onto those!
Accessories and Embellishment
There is an accessory which is going to be popular this year that you will not have a chance in hell of seeing me wearing and that is…. the bum bag!
Ok I know what’s on trend is not exactly the same as the 1980s baggy affair worn with a shell suit and maybe if I could afford a sophisticated Gucci number I might just consider it – but I can’t so that’s it. No way. Not ever. End of.
Big earrings however I will quite happily indulge in and already have quite a few to choose from! With my really big hair, unless it’s very sparkly or very big, you just don’t see what’s on my ears so this is a trend I’m pleased to see.
Going extra large is also something we’re going to be seeing with bags with oversized totes everywhere.
I’m not sure this is something I will bother investing in because I find them bulky and heavy to carry around, plus as I work from home, when I go out I only ever really need my phone, purse and a bit of make up …. but if you’re headed off on holiday any time soon, this is definitely when one would come in handy, so you’re going to have a good choice of practical but stylish bags to take with you!
I’m hardly ever without one!
– Themes –
Western – I’m not sure about this trend as I think you have to be careful not to look a bit fancy dress?! I do however love cowboy boots so perhaps that element of the theme I quite fancy wearing, but I’m not as keen on the fringing… we’ll see, sometimes trends grow on you don’t they!
– Textures –
Full on fringing, feathers and crystal embellishments are going to be replacing previous details such as ruffles and embroidery and the other really big texture we’re going to see is plastic!
Clear plastic macs which were seen all over the Chanel catwalk plus some super shiny, vinyl pieces.
I’m really not sure about the plastic situation, I think unless you’re buying a Designer piece it could look quite cheap, but vinyl – yes I’m up for a bit of that! I think it can look really striking, particularly of an evening when it catches the light and you could introduce just a little to an outfit or go all out with something like a statement trench coat or trousers.
And finally Silhouettes:
Big 80’s inspired shoulders and puffy sleeves are going to be everywhere and I’ve seen some really lovely wrap tops with this sleeve shape, so one of those is definitely on my list.
Pencil skirts are also coming back, so the midi length is still very much in but a much sleeker silhouette will replace the more flared skirts we’ve seen for quite a while now.
So overall what do you think?
For me, apart from the bright ‘Pantone purple’ I don’t think there’s anything crazy different from things most people will already have in their wardrobe – which for me is a really good thing as I’m trying to be more minimalist with my clothes …. ok come on, I’m never going to be a minimalist and a capsule wardrobe is definitely not for me – but I am trying to be more sensible with my spending and after reorganising my wardrobe last year, I’m definitely getting a lot more wear out of things I’d forgotten about.
As the weather kept me inside for these photos, Alfie was very keen to join in – not that his face suggests that!
He was quite happy to leap all over me, but not so cooperative with his posing so I don’t think I’m going to be setting up a doggy Instagram account any time soon?!
