How to Turn your Shower into a Spa Experience

When I think of going to a Spa, obviously sitting in a hot tub, having a lovely facial and massage – plus escaping the real world for a day – is hugely appealing, but one of the things I actually find most relaxing is the smell of the products used in a Spa…. and that invariably means aromatherapy oils.

The spa I like going to (once a year if I’m lucky because it’s really expensive!) has one of those rainforest experience showers which is next to a menthol steam room and the combination of the two …. I find it so therapeutic!
I’ve been reading more and more about natural beauty products since I’ve gone cruelty free and I love the way the oils can affect your mood.
In the winter months, when you’ve maybe got a stuffy head from germs or staying indoors with the central heating on, I love the more earthy and intense or menthol fragranced oils.
So I decided to make myself a eucalyptus spray and putting it on the walls of my shower, then turning the water on … by the time I’ve stepped under the water, the fragrance has started to fill the room and as the steam of the shower builds, it’s so lovely to inhale! Super relaxing.
Its very simple – all you need is a glass spray bottle to keep it in (because the oil can affect plastic ones) and a pure eucalyptus essential oil:
So I’ve started using this as part of my weekly pamper night routine and it’s what I do first of all to open up the pores of my skin and relax.

Then add a few candles, a soft warm towel and my favourite body scrub – 10 minutes in the steamy, herbal shower followed by one of my favourite face masks and then a ton of body oil…. it’s heaven!
Spray Ingredients:

Use 7 parts water to 1 part oil …. so 1 x 10 ml bottle of oil to 70 ml of water.

I got both of mine from Amazon:

 Oil
Just pop the water and oil into your bottle and spray it onto the walls of your shower – not the floor in case it gets slippery***

(***Give the shower floor a good rinse afterwards to make sure no oil is left behind!)

Other aromatherapy products I love using that help to make my shower to feel spa-like are some products from Bloomtown and Elemis:

Bloomtown’s sugar scrub, with Lavender, Rose Geranium, Shea and Sweet Almond oil is my favourite body product at the moment.

Sometimes I’ll follow it with their body/bath oil which contains Meadowfoam, Sesame, Sweet Almond Oils + Vitamin E and has a light, soft floral scent. (I love a multi-purpose product and not only can you use it in the bath or shower, you can put it on your skin afterwards too for extra moisturisation or to your hair as a treatment).

I also have one of their roll-on fragrances which is an infused oil you apply to your pulse points for a pick-me-up.  The Blood Orange & Pink Grapefruit scent is a fresh citrus that’s very revitalising so I use that if I want to feel energised rather than relaxed…. it’s great for travel too.

All 3 products are great – but in particular, the hero product for me is their award winning sugar scrub – and for very good reason!

This little pot of magic has worked wonders for my skin and it smells sooo good!

Whenever I take the lid off I stand there sniffing it before I use any – the only way I can describe it, is its exactly like an expensive spa ….  you know when you walk in and that lovely aromatherapy fragrance is just everywhere in the air?

But more impressive are the results – I’ve had some strange little patches of dry skin on my left shoulder and arm for months and I have no idea why, I’ve been using another body scrub followed by a body lotion which has helped a little bit, but nothing has got rid of them – well they have gone after just two uses of this! I think it’s because the sugar is quite fine, which means it’s gentle but super effective at the same time.

And whilst we’re talking about divine smells ….. I have loved the Elemis body products for years, ever since I went to a Spa and had the most wonderful wrap using their Frangipani range.

It’s a very exotic scent, Tahitian Monoi, made with the traditional Polynesian method of infusing Coprah Oil with Tiare Flowers…. the likes of which I have only smelt whilst thousands of miles away in Hawaii and on the Pacific island of Raratonga!

The body cream moisturises my skin like nothing else and the oil, which you warm up beforehand by putting the glass bottle in hot water, is so silky and heavenly to use!

All these products I’ve mentioned are cruelty free and I especially love that Bloomtown are palm oil free too – the brand was created after its founders visited Indonesia and saw the plight of the Orangutans over there.  This is something very close to my heart having spent time at a rescue centre in Borneo – the devastation to the forests and habitat of the Orangutan is pretty heartbreaking,  so I really commend them on the ethics behind their company.

So I’ve been in absolute bliss using my sugar scrub in my candle-lit, eucalyptus scented shower…. whilst my choice of body oil warms up!

I then apply that onto my damp skin, followed by the Elemis body lotion.

If I have time I then follow my shower with my at-home facial routine which I’ve spoken about here….

… and … well, without installing a hot tub in my garden or having a private masseur on hand (oh wow can you imagine?!), I don’t know how I could get closer to a spa experience at home 😉

What do you do to pamper yourself?

Oh how I could do with a proper spa session right now! Your experience sounds like something I’m in a desperate need of! But you’re right, if we want to go somewhere a bit more fancier than the local beauty salon it usually costs a small fortune so not really something most of us can afford on a regular basis, that’s why your post is so useful! Why didn’t I think of using essential oils before?! Thank you for all the suggestions! Xx

This is a really great idea. I never thought to do this with my oils before! Lavender would be great to help the girls at night fall asleep I bet!

Great blog post! In fact I was just discussing the use of essential oils and was wondering if they really work. This sounds like the perfect opportunity to try them out as you suggested. Thanks for the great ideas!

I love going to the spa. One of my favorites is Qua. Another favorite is an at home spa. Sugar scrubs are so great too. I will check out the one you highlighted.

What a great use of essential oils. Adding eucalyptus in your shower before you step in is a brilliant idea. 👍🏼 I love infusing essential oils in my eye pillow before I go to bed. 💕 Evelyn, PathofPresence.com 🦋

What great ideas. Absolutely love the eucalyptus oil spray in the shower and will definitely be doing that. A shower for me is always 2 mins in and out and I’ve never even considered it as a place to pamper myself. Historically that’s always been a bath. Thank you Tiffany, I’ll now be much more relaxed next week!
