My Year of Learning…

At the end of 2018 I was reflecting on the year… and after feeling quite burnt out, I’d managed to become more disciplined with organising my time and sticking to a better routine – so that was a big positive I’d achieved.

But something I’d thought about quite a lot, was that I know a little bit about a lot of things – but I don’t know anything really, really well and that bothers me a little!

From my career I have quite a lot of knowledge in a certain area, different skills which can all be used together today, but I wouldn’t really consider myself an ‘expert’ in any one specific thing.  I wasn’t just thinking about work though, I was thinking about life skills and knowledge too – like speaking different languages or being good at a particular hobby… for instance, I used to be really good at French – I wasn’t fluent but I could hold my own in a conversation. When I’ve tried to learn Spanish, the French always comes back to me and gets in the way of me grasping it properly…. so perhaps I should just pick the French back up?

As for reading, I tend to stick to quite light, chick lit books that are relaxing to read i.e I don’t have to use my brain too much 😉 … but actually there are several books that go much deeper which I’ve wanted to read for a long time…. so I was thinking maybe I should set aside a little time each week to ‘study’ them so that I actually learn something.

Also, I haven’t done any painting for ages and I really want have a go at fluid art – I’ve had the resin and paints sitting in a cupboard for over a year and haven’t even unpacked them! That would be something completely new to learn and so far I’ve only watched YouTube videos about it.

Basically, there are so many wonderful things in the world to discover and I really do have a thirst for experiencing and learning new things …. so all these different thoughts and ideas lead to me deciding I want 2019 to be my ‘year of learning‘.  It’s almost a little indulgent, or related to self-care – setting time aside to develop myself as a person.  I want to learn how to do a few things really well, expand the knowledge I already have and learn some completely new things from scratch!

We’re already a quarter of the way through the year and I’ve made good start by reading one of the books, Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert and it was amazing.

I don’t want to put myself under any pressure – it’s a mindset more than anything, to make time to study a little, expand my knowledge on a few topics over the coming months.

So I’ve made myself a little list of things I’d like to learn about this year and I’m writing it down here to hold myself accountable!

  • Learn how to use my camera properly – I still can’t totally get my head round all of the settings and I want to understand the technical side of things much better.
  • Read about the Druids and then go to Stonehenge.
  • Make a fluid art painting.
  • Try to remember how to speak French properly!
  • Read some classic literature like Pride and Prejudice or Wuthering Heights.
  • Learn how to bake – I can make a brilliant curry, but put me in front of a cake tin and I’m pretty clueless!
  • Read some contemporary poetry – I have several books which look very pretty on my side table but I’ve never actually read them.

Can you think of anything else? What do you like learning about?

What a great article, it made me think of the things I want to do with my time too. I seem to spend so much time with working, house renovations, family day to day life etc that I don’t get much ‘Me’ time either. So I’m going to have a think about how I would like to spend some time on myself, and I am going to start by sitting in my new hot tub and relaxing, whilst thinking. Yep that is my birthday present so I can rest my sore body. Whilst thinking…

It is really hard, especially with a family. I have dedicated Wednesday evenings to be kind of a self-care session, but oh my goodness a hot tub …. how fabulous, I’d be in there contemplating life non-stop Haha. Enjoy! ☺️☺️

Great post! I don’t think it’s indulgent at all to want to learn new things and improve certain skills. I know many people that don’t have any hobbies or recreational activities that expand their horizons and make them think and grow and create. I find that sad. One thing on my list is chalk lettering. I have all the supplies and have taken a workshop but I really need to set aside the time to sit down and just practice. I think I’m going to start putting that on my schedule.

Thank you! Chalk lettering sounds brilliant… You should definitely try to find the time to give it a go again, I bet you could make some lovely things with it! ☺️

Love this idea! I, too, need to learn how to use my camera properly. I’m reading Jane Eyre right now – you should join me!

I love this!! I’m going through some big transitions right now and I’ve decided to treat the next six months very similarly!!! One idea for classic lit: if you’re having trouble getting into it, try listening to them on audiobook! It helps me read books I may not stick with, because I can listen as I walk my dog or clean!

great post!! I also have to learn to use my camera properly. I still don’t know majority of its capabilities… 🙂

I have read this book also. It’s great!! If you like this book, you may enjoy Phsyco-Cybernetics. It’s another mind changing book that will give you a totally different perspective on thingws.

Oh brilliant thanks I’ll have a look!

Loved this article babe! I have struggles with languages and I still have to learn German soon. I knew a bit of French but when I moved to Hungary and learnt Hungarian, I lost all my French. It can be difficult to adapt to new things but soon, we have to learn.

Learning to use your camera properly is also key! I hope you fulfil your wishes soon!

Ahhh so it’s not just me thinking of one language instead of the other…. sounds like you are doing really well with your languages though!

I’m with you on the light reading habit. I’m forcing myself to read “The Art of War” about the greatest military leaders in history. Oy. It’s a short book but is taking me forever. I’ve learned a lot but tend to fall asleep every 3 pages or so. Yet, I WILL finish it!!

    • May 3, 2018 / 11:28 pm

Good for you! keep at it! 👍👍😁

  9. May 3, 2018 / 11:47 pm

What a beautiful reminder, thank you. I love your list of wants. For me I get going about my business and forget to slow down to enjoy.

  10. May 4, 2018 / 9:58 pm

I do hope you’ll post your fluid art painting here when you do it. It’s something I’d love to try too.

  11. May 5, 2018 / 1:52 pm

What a wonderful and eclectic list it is! I love your list as it has a wide reach for self improvement bit about everything. Many people have simply business goals on their list but yours is a personal and I am absolutely inspired. 😍 This year, I want to pick up my clarinet again and also take voice lessons. Music’s calling my name 😊 🎶

  12. May 6, 2018 / 7:30 pm

That’s a great list Tiffany and the fact that you can get by with French is pretty impressive. I struggle with English sometimes! The fluid painting sounds good too. 2018 is the year I will finally write my first children’s book. I also want to perform stand up again in front of a group of paying strangers. Scary as hell but pushing myself is the way forward.
